Rembrandt van Rijn is considered one of the most important painters of the 17th century. Rembrandt did not want to make art only for the wealthy merchants. He also made etchings. An etching is a copper or zinc plate in which a relief is made by etching or scratching with a small steel pen. With this technique, Rembrandt could produce smaller drawings. When he had completed an etching, he could have dozens of prints made. As a result, this enabled less wealthy to have works of art by Rembrandt in their homes.
During this workshop you will learn more about techniques such as the “dry point technique, copper plates and relief printing in general” and make prints of your own linocut on the press.
I will start with a short welcome, accompanied by coffee, tea and carrot cake. I will outline what we are going to do and explain the materials and tools we work with. Everyone will make a drawing which is then transferred to the medium, In this instance, the medium is linoleum. The drawing process should be finished around lunch time. Lunch is provided in our small courtyard, weather permitting. After lunch we will continue with gouging out the linoleum. This process will take quite a while and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.
When the “plates” are ready, we can prepare for printing. We work with special paper and special ink. The paper and ink are prepared so that we can make prints using the cast iron manual press or the wooden table press. We then let the prints dry while we enjoy a drink and snack, after which everyone can depart with his or her print.

After a career as a graphic designer, design manager and e-commerce consultant, I returned to my original love and craft, that of graphic techniques and in particular, etching techniques. In the 1970s I followed a 4-year training with technology, aesthetics and natural art history as the main subjects. I try to use Rembrandt’s techniques as much as possible as well as the materials he used, including a wooden etching press that have I built.
