Description
Our history shapes who we are and helps us understand where we come from.
Veenhuizen was founded in 1823 as part of the Colonies of Benevolence, created by Johannes van den Bosch to combat poverty and unemployment after the Napoleonic Wars. Poor and later forced settlers were sent to cultivate the barren heathlands of Drenthe, transforming them into productive farmland.
Over time, Veenhuizen evolved from a social experiment into a state-run institution. After 1875, under the Ministry of Justice, it became a well-known prison village, famous for its strict regime and isolated character
