Iron, Fire and Water, a craftsman needs nothing more to create the most beautiful objects. In a former brick factory in the floodplains of Wageningen, a small-scale forge keeps its fires burning bright. The setting is both ideal and idyllic, nestled in the river floodplains north of the Nederrijn, in a landscape shaped by clay excavations, historic harbor structures, open grasslands, and waterways. It is a place where nature, history, and industrial heritage converge.

Experience description

Blacksmithing is the craft of shaping metal through heat, force, and precision. A blacksmith masters the temperature of the fire, uses hammers and an anvil to bend and model metal, and applies techniques such as heating, quenching, welding, and joining. Through careful heat control, deliberate hammering, and the right choice of construction method, the result is a strong, durable — and often beautiful — finished piece.

About

Lucas

Smederij Janssen-69
Lucas was in his mid-fifties when he began searching for a new direction, one that was more creative and hands-on, with room for genuine human connection and the freedom of working independently. At both his father’s and mother’s side of the family, the working with steel and copper were present in the past. In the end, this resulted in Lucas also picking up this trade with various courses and internships. Since 2023, he is to be found most of the days in his workshop. Lucas loses himself in the trade, producing small-scale forged pieces for in and around the house and garden. This includes: grilles, landings, lettering, creative pieces, etc.
