Walking the Pieterpad: Discover the Netherlands’ Most Iconic Hiking Trail

Last week, I walked three stages of the Pieterpad — the most iconic long-distance hiking trail in the Netherlands. Stretching nearly 500 kilometers from the northern village of Pieterburen to the hills of Sint-Pietersberg near Maastricht, this trail offers much more than just a walking route.

It’s a journey straight through the heart and soul of the Netherlands.

Along the way, you pass through an ever-changing landscape: wide-open polders, quiet forests, heathlands, charming villages, and historic cities. Every stage reveals a different side of Dutch life, culture, and nature. But most of all, it invites you to slow down.

What struck me the most was how connected I felt — to the land, to the people, and to the moment. You wave to cyclists, chat with fellow hikers, stop at tiny cafés for a slice of homemade apple pie, and listen to the stories of locals who live along the trail.

This is slow travel at its finest. And this is where the Pieterpad becomes more than just a hike.
