Embarking on a Journey of Regenerative Tourism: A Personal Experience

Join me as I embark on an exciting journey into the world of regenerative tourism. Once you start digging into this fascinating topic, a whole new world begins to open up. However, I found myself overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information available, and I needed some guidance to focus my energy and figure out how to approach it. So, I turned to ChatGPT and asked the question: How can I become an expert in regenerative tourism with A Dutch Experience (ADE)?

Within seconds, I was presented with a beautiful list of suggestions to deepen my knowledge, build a strong network, and establish thought leadership. ChatGPT also recommended attending conferences and pointed out that my upcoming trip to the tourism conference in Switzerland would be a great start. It felt reassuring to know that, despite the complexity of it all, I wasnā€™t doing this alone. It truly felt like I had some guidance along the way.

Building Knowledge and Connections

Since then, Iā€™ve been reading newsletters, engaging with thought leaders, and connecting with networks like the Transformational Travel Council (a global network focused on meaningful, sustainable travel) and The Long Run (a sustainability network for businesses focusing on regenerative tourism). Each of these resources has provided valuable insight and support as I learn more about this powerful approach to tourism.

Implementing Regenerative Practices at A Dutch Experience (ADE)

ChatGPT also provided three key suggestions for incorporating regenerative tourism practices at ADE, which Iā€™m excited to work on:

  1. Design Experiences with Regeneration in Mind: The goal is to ensure that our tours and experiences contribute positively to the local culture, environment, and economy.
  2. Develop a Regenerative Tourism Framework: This includes creating guidelines for experiences that focus on restoration, long-term sustainability, and community benefits.
  3. Measure Impact: Tracking how our tours positively affect local communities and ecosystems is crucial. This data will allow us to improve and promote our regenerative efforts.

I can confidently say that point number one is already something I practice at ADE. While Iā€™ve never explicitly labeled my approach as “regenerative,” Iā€™ve always been drawn to meeting people who combine these three elements. Itā€™s amazing to realize that Iā€™ve been working toward regeneration all along, even without using the terminology.

Points two and three, however, require more research and effort. Iā€™m hopeful that my participation in the Regenerative Tourism Conference in Switzerland will spark ideas and provide the inspiration I need to refine these aspects of ADEā€™s operations.

A Personal Example of Regenerative Tourism: NiƱos Hotel in Peru

One of the most impactful examples of regenerative tourism that Iā€™ve encountered during my travels was our stay at NiƱos Hotel in Cusco, Peru. NiƱos Hotel, operated by the NiƱos del Sol Foundation, is a shining example of how tourism can support local communities, promote sustainability, and create positive change.

The hotelā€™s focus is on benefiting local children and families. The NiƱos del Sol Foundation provides educational, nutritional, and social support to children in need, and a percentage of the hotelā€™s profits go directly into these programs. This means that every guest who stays at the hotel is directly contributing to improving the lives of these children.

NiƱos Hotel also places a strong emphasis on preserving and promoting local culture. Guests have the opportunity to engage with the community, learn about traditional Peruvian crafts, and experience the rich cultural heritage of the Andean region. The hotel supports local artisans by showcasing and selling their handmade goods, providing them with a sustainable income and promoting traditional craftsmanship.

Additionally, the hotelā€™s business model is built to reinvest in the local community. By prioritizing local hiring and purchasing from local businesses, NiƱos Hotel strengthens the regional economy. This creates a regenerative cycle where both the community and the hotel benefit from the positive, lasting impact of responsible tourism.

A Philosophy That Resonates

What truly appeals to me about NiƱos Hotel and regenerative tourism as a whole is the frame of mind it encourages. Itā€™s not just about collecting souvenirs and checking off destinations; itā€™s about cultivating a deeper sense of purpose and establishing meaningful connections with the places we visit. Itā€™s about moving beyond the superficial to engage with local communities and support sustainable, long-term regeneration.

My Journey Toward Something New

As I continue on this journey toward regenerative tourism, I am excited about what lies ahead. Iā€™m eager to learn more, share my knowledge, and help build a business that not only provides incredible travel experiences but also contributes positively to the world around us.

This is a journey Iā€™m passionate about, and I canā€™t wait to see how it evolves. The path ahead is filled with opportunities, and Iā€™m thrilled to be on it.
